Business Type: Scenic Reserve

Overview

This spectacular stretch of Wairarapa coastline is a gem, with a sheltered lagoon for swimming, great surfcasting spots where you can reel in snapper, a fossil-rich limestone reef and an historic lighthouse.

Address: Masterton Castlepoint Road, Wairarapa, New Zealand Masterton, Wairarapa

Description

The 30min Castlepoint Lighthouse Walk has a fantastic view across to Castle Point Hill (162m) and right along the coast.

Look out for fossil shells in the rock as you follow the boardwalk over the reef.

The area is regularly visited by dolphins and fur seals, so keep an eye out as you explore.

There’s also heaps of birdlife, including white-fronted terns, black shags and reef herons.

To get to the reserve, turn right into Te Ore Ore Road on the northern outskirts of Masterton (which becomes Masterton Castlepoint Road).

Access to the lighthouse can be restricted by high tides and strong winds.
