Business Type: Glow Worm Caves

Want to see a spectacular glow-worm wonderland in a location far off the Kiwi beaten track? This walk-through cavern begins in a knee-deep stream and meanders for an hour or so with frequent stops to admire the subterranean ‘night sky’.

Address: Ruakokoputuna, Martinborough, Wellington Masterton, Wairarapa

It’s a veritable lost world that suits all ages, temperaments and tolerances for enclosed spaces. Photos should be taken without a flash – a 15 second exposure usually works.

As you emerge into daylight at the far end you’ll be entranced by the vivid green vistas of native bush and pasture framed by the narrow clefts, canyons and craggy cave mouth. Native birds like the kereru pigeon, tui and bellbird abound in the forested areas along the gentle Blue Creek. The cave is reached via the Martinborough-Awhea Road just south of Martinborough, which leads to Ruakokoputuna Road.

These caves on the Blue Rock Road boast several large caverns alive with glow worms and make an ideal adventure for family groups. Allow at least an hour to explore and expect to get wet feet. Bring a torch.

The caves are not open to the public and permission to enter must be obtained from Garry or Lois McAvoy: 06 306 9797
