Scenic lake and river trips and viewing the dams and local landmarks, wildlife, Waikato River gorge and the stunning scenery of the Lake Whakamaru.

About the cruise
The Otunui makes regular trips on Lake Whakamaru. This two hour cruise heads south down Lake Whakamaru towards the Whakamaru Dam passing the Whakamaru Reserve (where Yogi Bear was filmed), Waipamu Station, the Waikato River Trails, wetlands and farmland.

The sights
Lake Whakamaru was formed with completion of the Whakamaru Dam and powerstation in 1956. We pass by native trees such as Tanekaha, Ponga, Rimu and some pine and willows while ignimbrite cliffs carved and channelled by water, wind and time, dominate the riverscape. Coots, Teal and Paradise Ducks, Cormorants, Swans and Falcons are a few of the birds we will see, along with many trout and the occasional wild boar along the river edge, curiously watching the boats passing.

The experience
A commentary will point out features as we pass by and give a history of the lake, stream and local community. Any questions on the boat or the points along the way can be answered by the skipper or crew.

River Trail Shuttles
Riding or hiking the Waikato River Trails? Talk to us about our Shuttle Service. We will drop you off from the paddleboat to cycle or walk back to Whakamaru or Atiamuri at a distance that suits you.

A Trout fishing trip on the Otunui paddleboat is a great way to spend time with friends or family. Charter the boat, gather your mates and tackle and get away for a relaxing trip on Lake Whakamaru. Spend the day or make a weekend of it, it's up to you.

Lake Whakamaru is well known for its Trout. Rud, catfish, eel and Brown and Rainbow Trout are plentiful. An Easten Region fishing license is required but there are no size or number of tackle restrictions on the Lake. So you can fish to your heart's content.

We can arrange to fire up the BBQ or organise food if arranged in advance. Let us know and we can organise pizza or other items from local businesses and we'll make sure to stock up the fridge.

The Otunui is licensed to carry up to 48 passengers. We have seating in the main salon and seating or standing on the fore or stern deck.

The scenery, coupled with the Skipper's commentary of the area's history, birds, fish, native and exotic forests and landscape features, is sure to entertain.

If requested, the crew can provide relaxing or uplifting music to accompany the cruise.

We are located at Whakamaru Island on Lake Whakamaru -- 1105 Ongaroto Road, Kinleith SH30 (at Dunham's Point Reserve).
